Since its inception in 1969, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has been frontrunner and dominant entity in the Indian Space sector. However, the major shift in the global space arena, especially with the entry of private players, is driving the changes in the India’s space domain also. With its recent restructuring, India wants to leverage the situation to grow multi-fold.
Traditionally, ISRO has been involved in R&D efforts and production contributing to 50% of the total space economy in India with the balance 50% taken up by the industry players, both, Public and Private enterprises. As part of the revised model, ISRO now aims to become primarily a Technology Enabler with target contribution of 30-40%. This opens the massive 60-70% of the business for the industry players. Indeed, this will transform the space economy from being Supply Driven to Demand Driven economy.
To smoothen this transformation and successfully exploit this opportunity, the Department of Space, Govt of India has formed two additional entities:
ISRO now aims to become primarily a Technology Enabler with target contribution of 30-40%.
This opens the massive 60-70% of the business for the industry players.
Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe): A single window nodal agency to work as a bridge between ISRO and Industry which will facilitate technology transfer, encourage industry participation and hand holding.
NewSpace India Limited (NSIL): A commercial arm of ISRO aimed to taken up mass production through industry and marketing of the technology, products, and services to the global market.
